Introduction to LG Optimus 2X First Dual Core Smartphone

LG Optimus 2X is the first smartphone running 1GHz dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 chipset. There are also some other phone running two CPU cores but none of the are more powerful than Tegra 2. LG was in a bad condition in field of mobile phones but since it has launched Optimus series of phone it has taken over all the other manufacturers in that price range. Both LG and NVIDIA are making heavy capture in market by launching new products with first-to-market slogan. Lets see LG Optimus 2X in brief, in this LG Optimus 2X review.

Design of LG Optimus 2X

LG Optimus 2X feels very solid while handling it in hand and weighs only 140 gms with a decent thickness of 11mm. Optimus 2X comes with 4" large screen but even then it has a too much space below the display of Optimus 2X. Screen resolution of Optimus 2X is 480x800 pixels with punchy colors including LCD technology from LG IPS LCD. Display appeals to be the latest high-end phones itself. There is also four touch capacitive Android buttons below the display, which is very quick responsive. At the rear of the phone there is a 8 megapixel camera with LED flash and front facing camera with 1.3 megapixel camera for video chat and display.

User Interface of LG Optimus 2X, Functionality

Android 2.2 Froyo interface on LG Optimus 2X is organised very well, and also there is a dock at the bottom of the display which you will find in both home screens and main menu as well, this dock is slightly transparent and keeps four shortcuts with it to phone, contacts, messaging apps and to menu or home screen depending on which screen you are.

As it runs on Android, naturally you have a wide option of widgets, folder and shortcuts on it to be placed on home screens. You can see a couple of clocks and other widgets in one screen. You will specially like its calendar widgets, which opens in full layout, social feed, status widgets and many more. You can change main menu view of Optimus 2X from grid view to page view which brings slightly glowing red line effect with it. You can easily create app categories, overall performance and scrolling are fabulous.

LG Optimus 2X has a 1GHz dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 chipset with a user RAM of 380RAM, brings full HD video recording of 1080 pixels, while watching it on full HD capable display you are surely going to love its recorded videos.

LG Optimus 2X Messaging, Browser and Connectivity

LG Optimus 2X messaging interface on 4" touchscreen looks pretty good as text messages are shown in threaded conversation. When you orient the display of Optimus 2X typing becomes more smoother on its keyboard. You will get more features when Optimus 2X updated to Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Also Optimus 2X screen gestures controls gives more reliability to provide more user friendly approach to you.

LG Optimus 2X web browser gives you the best browsing experience with no fluidity full scrolling, pinch-to-zoom, panning. You will also get Adobe flash support on Optimus 2X, it doesnt takes too much time like other flash supported phones in web browsers. You will get full web browsing experience loading extremely fast.

If we look at the connectivity options of Optimus 2X, it has the full support of connectivity options. 3G, WiFi, Bluetooth etc. are just a introducing feature with A-GPS, as well as FM Radio with HDMI port. By the update feature you can also download the all new versions of Google Maps with digital compass which shows your exact position on earth.

LG Optimus 2X Camera, Video and Multimedia

An 8 megapixel camera, full HD video recording with LED flash and what a user will demand with any phone which records full HD videos at 1080 pixels. Yes, Optimus 2X camera. It features several shooting modes and extremely fast response with Tegra 2 chipset. Videos are also quite responsive and capture each moment. It records videos at full HD 1080 pixels on Optimus 2X with high density and pixels clarity.

Try it in all color effects, vivid modes and photos and videos, and you will surely get high performance. You can also check LG Optimus 2X full HD 1080 pixels too see its video quality.

Performance of LG Optimus 2X

All on all, LG Optimus 2X is one of the best Android phones ever with decent performance and quality. Battery backup, talktime, processor all are different from other phones and much better than other phones. LG Optimus 2X just simply competes with Samsung Galaxy S in several aspects whether you talk about features and performance or price.

Review: LG Optimus 2X hardware, display and software
Review By: Ankit Sinha    Review Date: 15 Feb 2011

After the dual core processors in the PCs the geeks and much of other mobile lovers dreamt of a smartphone having the same technology processors. And as someone said ‘the first step for a great invention is a great dream’, the superb engineers of LG and NVIDIA too dreamt of this idea or maybe heard the wish of the world and did the engineering for which they are paid the loads of cash. So here is the first multicore mobile architecture mobile with the dual core processor, the Optimus 2X.

For LG and the tech world this is a landmark handset in a number of ways. Not only it is the first mobile with a dual core processor but also marks the entry of LG in the big leagues of high end Android smartphone manufacturers. LG has previously delivered two very good smartphones for Android platform with the Optimus S and T but the fell into mid range categories. Now with 2X LG has entered the big league of competition with Samsung, HTC and Motorola. But is it really a competition? Read on to find out!!

Hardware of LG Optimus 2X

Optimus 2X was showcased sometime before too under the code name Star. The whole front is an uninterrupted glass slate except a small slit at the top for the earpiece grille. The touchscreen has four capacitive touch buttons and a camera just right to the LG logo beneath it. It is a too simple yet sophisticated design which gives an impression that LG has spent its time and money on what goes beneath rather than on the body. The glass at the sides is curved and finishes beneath the metallic frame from the sides. The finishing here is good and you won’t feel where the glass ends and the metal starts. The back is a flexible matte plastic cover which fits very nicely into place and efficiently sealing of the back but even then it is very easily removed as placed back when you want to. The austere black color I got to review (there are brown and white versions too) has a silver column running through its middle with a slogan “with Google” ending with a slight bump near the top to make space for the 8 Mega Pixel camera which is protected but a glass cover.

All put together the look and nice is really of a high end smartphone. The body is mostly rigid and unyielding and though the material is the most commonly used but the way it has been put is appreciable. Time and attention has been given to design the body and that is evident from the only two buttons on the whole body, the perfectly sized power buttons and the volume keys. Though many may prefer the two or three buttons like of menu and call button to be non-capacitive for convenience we is have to accept what is part of the overall package.

Display of LG Optimus 2X

The screen is a 4-inch WVGA (800 x 480) LCD screen. Though it might be a bit standard spec but the panel on Optimus 2X is a notch above standard. The display is bright, has good saturation and gives good color fidelity even at oblique angles. Of course there are better screens in the market like the IPS screens on Apple’s iPhone 4 and Sharps IS03 but these are some standards which have very few competitors in the market. Without such a high end display or even the jazzed AMOLED screen of Samsung the screen of LG Optimus 2X is the next best thing in the market.

LG purposely designs touchscreen with some less sensitivity so as to avoid unintended inputs. It was first feature in Optimus 7 and now we have the same less sensitivity in Optimus 2X. It is not something that can be exactly termed as good or bad because once you get used to use a little hard presses on the screen you won’t notice it and it is actually a bit of pro of the screen only, though if you have been using a sensitive touchscreen phone then it might irritate you in the start a bit (or might even make you happy because of less unintended inputs).

Software in LG Optimus 2X

With such a processor one would expect lag on 2X to be in fractions compared to a Hummingbird handset (Samsung variants) but what you get in this little tweaked Android device is quite worse than what one can actually get in a Hummingbird device. Response of UI of 2X is extremely bad which is very surprising considering the extremely powerful processor. Point to be noted that the lag is not in the loading of softwares, in fact that is faster than most other phones but the navigation is where this problem comes out. Clearly this is a problem in the coding of the OS, specifically in the small tweaks that LG carried out and not in the programming by Google.

This problem is not only limited to navigation but is also present in the system resources. After installing a software named the Advanced Task Killer for Android phones which is similar to the Task Manager of Windows I stopped most of the task which were not required for OS stability and even then only 210MB of the 512MB could be cleared out which means that the OS itself took 300MB for running which is quite large considering the fact that it was not long ago when most of the smartphones used a 256MB RAM.

One of its reasons is the music app which is integrated in the Androids window shade slide down menu due to which this app cannot be closed down. This might not be too wrong an idea but definitely comes at the cost of performance of the phone. The messaging has the option of preview of unread messages phonebooks is clean and logically working and social networking options has a multiple status updater feature which can update your status in Facebook, Twitter and Myspace at once. This app is good but app of LG for Facebook and Twitter are not.

This type of problem is more common in Motoblur handset and some smart guys have designed a solution to it and that is the Launcher Pro. If anyone has used it then he will know about the remedial effects of this small skin on the phone. Written by Federico Carnale this skin can be downloaded from the market and after installing all problems of lagging vanish away. When I installed it, any problems with the mediocre responsiveness vanished away and all that was left was a snappy UI.

Except for these there were also instances while using the apps that the application crashed for example when I went from the Clock application to the Gallery and clicked the back button the application crashed. These might vary from set to set so not much can be said if other models in the market will also suffer from this problem.

Wrap Up

LG was earlier not counted much in the market of high end phones but LG Optimus 2X might be considered as the entry of the Korean giant in this market for high end devices. The success or failure of this phone will pave the future plans of the development of this company and its results in market thus, will matter a lot.

Review: LG Optimus 2X Performance, Camera and Audio
Review By: Ankit Sinha    Review Date: 15 Feb 2011

Processor of LG Optimus 2X- the Tegra 2 Processor

The highlight internal feature, the reason for the hype in market of LG Optimus 2X is definitely its Tegra 2 processor. Its two cores are the 1GHz Cortex-A9 CPU and eight GeForce GPU. Inspite of two cores they easily fit into the body with the native HDMI and dual display support. Pairing these two in a single smartphone means that you can multitask by watching your content on your Optimus 2X and your nearest HDTV together at one instant. Although, this capability is limited while video playback when only your HDTV will get the feed it still has many dual usages like during browsing or showing off your images. If you want to play games then you can use your Optimus 2X as a motion controller for playing games preloaded on your 2X on the big screen. You can imagine what a great expertise and power is required to display 3D games using HDMI mirroring technique but if you are holding 2X you might not notice this.

There is a HDMI cable bundled with the package with can also be used to watch the 1080p content of the 2X, here also the image is sharp and clear and played without any flaw. As already mentioned above that for video content there is no mirroring but I don’t suppose that will be an issue with anyone because you won’t watch the video feed on two displays in any case. No set up is required to connect HDMI connection and video switches on the fly- you connect the cable and the video appears on the screen, you disconnect it and the it starts to play on the device from the same part and not from start.

There might be a lot of talk about the dual core processing in a smartphone but in practice there are very few lifetime applications where you would need such a monstrous processing power. From some time all the latest devices are coming out with high processing power and they perform their tasks well be it a Snapdragon, Hummingbird or an A4. Now after all what process on a smartphone will bog down a 1GHz processor. The selling point for this dual core processor phone in the market is that however you might load up the CPU by multitasking it is not going to be bogged down. You might slow down a single core process by extensive multitasking like download cum browsing cum audio playback but that is where you stop. For any more tasking you will have to close one thing or the else because after all you have only one screen and speaker!! Thus the actual advantage of such power is not much.

Camera of LG Optimus 2X

The camera quality with the 8 Mega Pixel resolution is amazing. The images are filled with detail and offers clear zooming capability to quite high extent. The voice recorder with or without video recording is clear with a very good background noise-reducing blur. Just like its elder brother Optimus 7 the LED of 2X is also very bright, so much that your image might end up washed out if it is too close. It is a very good little camera to carry in your pocket and the adjustments features act like icing on the cake.

There are a few complaints too here. The images are a somewhat washed out, bleak to be precise. Not a big issue considering the number of options for color settings including a vivid color adjustment of its own. In saturation might be a little bleak but the detail more than makes up for it.

Another thing here is that after taking the first image the phone takes some time to process the image before getting ready for the second one. This is too not a big complain and I might not have maybe written about it if not for the fact that there is no sign to show that the phone is still working. The user might end up thinking that the phone has hanged up inspite of having such a processor!

The front 1.3 Mega Pixel camera of LG Optimus 2X should be considered strictly for video calling functions only. Step out from a perfectly lighted up room and there are chromatic distortions in the creeping up in the image. Just don’t think of taking image with this front camera. Now coming to the video recording of LG Optimus 2X, well it is mostly faultless, no stutters or processing lag here. Performance in still is even better it takes in a lot of detail both visually and aurally.

You can also check LG Optimus 2X full HD 1080 pixels too see its video quality.

Loudspeaker, earpiece and battery life of LG Optimus 2X

The speaker arrangement in LG Optimus 2X is identical to the iPhone- it is placed behind the right grille and is an excellent placement in terms of sound quality. You won’t be able to muffle the sound by blocking the speaker port as it escapes through the faulty body design. Not a complain but might prove a problem if you need to stop the sound suddenly. The earpiece is good quality like other competitor phones in the market- no better or worse. You might get a warmed up ear on talking for a long time but then it would happen with any other similar phone too.

Having a powerful processor might have had an effect of its battery life so this was something I was interested to test deeply. I was not disappointed here, battery of 2X is able to keep up with the current Android powerhouses in the market, and it even outperformed the less frugal HD Desire in terms of battery life. This long life can be attributed to the ability of Tegra 2 processor to idle (it draws very less power) under no usage. An average usage comprising of a hour talk, few minutes of HD video playback and some music playback while having the Wi-Fi radio and 3G on and push messages set up to refresh within half an hour did not discharge the battery before its marked 24 hours. Thus you can comfortably take it with you on a trip where you would use it similarly to a single core smartphone but if you have just bought it and want to try it on I would recommend carry the charger with you. The heaviest drainers of the battery, as expected, were the camera followed by the 1080 encoding and decoding. If you are comparing it with some other phone I would recommend not doing so because efficiency of a phone is decided by power consumption due to the work load and duration of work load where the latter is less on a fast processor. But still the battery life is not much different from other similar phones like Galaxy S or Droid.

Wrap Up

After trying this phone out I have good news for LG. They have definitely built a solid foundation for competition in this market by the powerful Tegra 2 processor and the specs of this phone are further a good competition in the Android market. The screen might be a simple one but in the class of LED’s it is a good one. The little tweaks by LG seemed to have further the unresponsiveness problem of Android. It might be that there is a solution to this problem in a external skin but a review is done of the default features of the company product and this is definitely something on which LG engineers need to work upon.

Review: It is bit costly
Review By: NADEEM NAQVI    Review Date: 01 Jun 2011

LG Optimus 2X is no doubt a good phone with a good processor speed. But the draw back with this set is its cost which is somewhere between 30,000 to 32,000. The other problem it is a touch phone, which is not favourable for the people who are using net and always on the move.
The photo quality is better than other but one is not buying a camera but a mobile with good features.

Even being a good dual core smartphone this phone has failed to create a good market for it. There is lot of thing that has been done good in this phone. And many thing could have been improved. There is no dedicated key for camera whereas even now normal phones have these feature. As if we see the external cover it could have been made better. It will take sometime for other companies to launch dual core phone. If you want to be updated with new technology then you can go ahead but i cant say this is a right choice
