Windows 8 Smart Screen Filter

The windows 8 is expected by all at the starts or middle of 2011. But it may released at the end of 2011. This Os is inbuilt with more new features which are not present in the previous OS by the microsoft. The SmartScreen Filter is the new features which is present in Windows 8.

SmartScreen Filter
The latest features discovered for windows 8 is SmartScreen Filter. SmartScreen Filter is used to protect us from phishing websites and malicious file downloads which are present in Internet Explorer and Windows Live Messenger.
Now the Microsoft make this smart-screen filter feature to its new upcoming os windows 8. This make the users to protect their PC from malicious file downloads when they use any browser to browse the internet.

This feature is inbuilt in windows os but we have to activate that manually. Initially they provide the os with disable state, we have to configure that to enable. Then the os will protect the system from any type of malware while accessing the internet.

The Folder option is shown below:

In this the user have to enable the two fields which are:
- Never run downloaded programs that are unknown to smartscreen
- Use SmartScreen to check files.

The Smartscreen acts like a antivirus software that uses a whitelist and blacklist approach. The whitelist files are considered as clean and the user can execute them without interface. Blacklist files are malicious which are blocked before executing.

The SmartScreen Filter features has two major limitations which are
False positives
Unknown Files
The false positive means, some harmless files are considered as mailicious and they are blocked by the os. On the other hand, the unknown files refer to some files have not been yet tested by the service which means the file is not in either of the list yet.
Thus the SmartScreen filter feature holds good for the malicious activites but it leads to some failures also.
