Mechanism and Types of Touch screen devices

The basic principle and types of touch screen devices are discussed in this article.

There are two types of touch screen devices are available
1. Capacitive
2. Resistive
Mechanism of capacitive touch screen
A capacitive touch screen employs an insulator such as glass which is coated with a transparent conductor while the other conductor to complete the circuit is our own human body. By touching our finger to the screen, the electrostatic field of our finger is distorted which then causes a change in capacitance on the glass. This information is then related to a controller for processing.

Mechanism of resistive touch screen

With resistive touch screens two conductive layers are placed on-top of each other with a narrow gap separating them. There are several layers on the top to prevent these conductive layers from getting directly touched by a stylus or finger as ft outs pressure on the top layer. This pressure makes the two conductive layers touch at a given point, thereby behaving like a pair of voltage dividers with connected outputs.
